Pete Ashton's little chat at #mtbworkshop

Very rough draft of comments Pete made, I'll perfect and put on blog later

Twitter is performance conversation

It's not all or nothing. You decide what information is seen

Internet is a cruel mistress, when everybody's special nobody's special

Just because u can reach everyone doesn't mean you will

Numbers are irrelevant, quality is important

Bham Social Media scene - isn't really one now, was one few years back. All about corridors and connecting people. Tap into community that has your interests. Don't go where everyone else is going

Be interested, mark your territory. People who are interested are interesting

Narratives of Twitter - different character's in different social media environments eg blog, twitter etc - grumpy blog, work blog, life tweets. Storytelling of life-definately occurs to blogs

If u want to get noticed by someone, talk about them! Broad way of keeping in touch with people. Twitter let's you do the small talk beforehand

Twitter Etiquete - social norms - everyone's is different. First of all u lurk then u get involved. Lots of overlapping communities where people relate to each other and build their own rules. Think of social media as part of the whole package - it's not a special magic scary thing

Why keep blogging - it's fun and I tapped into a community. Events from community lead to work e.g from Flickr. If you want to create a carrier out of internet u have to b at forefront of social media. Need to have a gimmick really. It's a level playing field. Digital Economy Bill may limit blogging in future. All this piracy moral panic may ruin it

What I learnt from Muath

I learnt so much this evening and I'm so glad I attended. I was a bit apprehensive at first but as the number of attendees grew so did the amount of conversation.

I had to admit Muath is one of the smartest people I've met and what he has achieved in Saudi with such a small team of people is mind boggling.

After years of trying to stress the importance of recycling and hitting many dead ends and glory hunters; he's finally achieved his ambition by aiming at 6 to 7 year olds in school.

Mauth has developed a recycling session that will be part of the Saudi school curriculum - the workshop would effectively take up 1 hour of the children's extra-curricular activities. The workshops are been trialled in 30 schools and if the trials are successful, the workshops could become national.

The key to the workshops is that they are interactive and subtle in their approach. The children learn a lot about helping the environment without it being rammed down their throats e.g they have learnt how to make compost.

Im amazed at what Mauth has achieved and intend to stay in contact with him to be updated on his latest eco conquests. It truly was a pleasure to meet him and the other people in attendance. Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

A real cultural insight

Today's guest speaker Muath originally from Jiddah. His story of the struggles he faced trying to promote recycling in Saudi Arabia.

Religion really is the key to achieving anything there and I found it shocking that Muath said that people would ask to see religious scriptures regarding recycling before even considering doing it!

Different cultures certainly do have different opinions on the environment. Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

So far so good

There's 6 of us here at the moment and I've already converted one guy to blogging. Bit upset that we were only offer a vegetarian menu. I wasn't the only one to point this out too.

Conversations are aflowing and it seems like I'm the one doing the most talking as evryones's interested in online social media! Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

Topics on tonight's menu

Tonight attendees to Green Drinks have some Saudi visitors to look forward to as the guests.

They'll be talking about the growing motivation to tackle eco issues since the shocking flashfloods in Jiddah. These schemes include education and recycling projects; a food voucher scheme and a co-housing scheme.
